Attorney Isaias Torres has a special and unique history with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients (also known as “Dreamers”). More than 35 years ago, Isaias Torres was one of the lawyers in a class action case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court and won the decision 5 to 4 in favor.
In the 1970s, the State of Texas had a law that barred undocumented immigrant children from attending public schools. These children were not allowed to go to school because of their immigrant status. In 1978, attorney Isaias Torres graduated from the law school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and began to work as a legal aid lawyer at an immigrant defense center in Houston. Isaias Torres and a group of lawyers, such as Peter Schey of the Los Angeles’ Center for Human Rights, filed a class action lawsuit against the state of Texas to allow the undocumented immigrant children to attend public school. That case eventually became known as Plyler v. Doe, 457 US 202. In June of 1982, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that the state of Texas should allow the children to go to school.
